GEs PII Unit Creates a New Pipeline Inspection Tool Based on EMAT Technology FLORENCE, ITALY (June 3, 2003) PII Pipeline Solutions, which is part of GE Oil & Gas, has developed the first pipeline inspection tool based on Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) technology. PIIs EmatScan CD® uses the well-proven EMAT technology to detect and precisely measure cracks as short as 30 mm and as shallow as 1 mm, delivering true high-resolution crack detection in gas transmission pipelines without the need for a liquid coupling medium. With PIIs EmatScan CD, operators of gas and other dry pipelines now can identify early signs of fatigue, stress corrosion cracking and other forms of axially oriented cracking with significantly fewer complications because it is no longer necessary to conduct hydro tests or use a liquid batch. After four years of intensive research and development, PII teams from Germany, Great Britain and Canadasupported by the Institut für zerstörungsfreie Werkstoffprüfung (IzfP), Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Research Center Karlsruhe as well as a major North American pipeline operatordeveloped EmatScan CD. EMAT technology now is available through PII and EmatScan CD is a unique solution for gas pipeline operators with specific problems assessing longitudinal cracks. EmatScan CD provides data so incredibly accurate that it will set new standards for the integrity, safety and profitability of the worlds most critically important pipelines, said Jose Larios, Market Manager-Inspection for PII. This is the most complex EMAT tool ever created. With EmatScan CD, PII now offers a solution for the detection of every type of cracking, in every type of pipeline. PII, the world leader in pipeline in-line inspections and integrity management services for the oil and gas industry, was acquired by GE Power Systems in 2002 and joined the GE Oil & Gas family. PII provides total pipeline integrity solutions, including in-line inspection tools, consulting and special analysis services, to provide customers with higher productivity, greater safety and longer life for their pipeline operations. GE Oil & Gas is headquartered in Florence, Italy, the home of Nuovo Pignone, a long-time global leader in gas compression and turbogeneration products. In addition to Nuovo Pignone and PII, other GE Oil & Gas units include Gemini, GE Packaged Power Odessa, Rotoflow, A-C Compressor and Conmec, all based in the U.S.; and Thermodyn of France.
