GE Hydro to Rewind Generator at California Power Station

ATLANTA, GEORGIA (October 27, 2003) – GE Hydro has received a contract from Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) to rewind one of two generators at the Middle Fork Powerhouse, a hydro station on the Middle Fork American River in Placer County, California.

GE is supplying new windings for unit 2 at the Middle Fork site, a Toshiba 13.8 kV, 68 MVA hydro generator. GE Hydro rewound unit 1 in 1998. Under a separate contract signed last year, GE Hydro also is replacing the runners for the two Pelton turbines at the powerhouse.

Coils for the generator rewind were manufactured at a GE Hydro facility in Beloeil, Quebec, Canada, and shipped to the project site in September. Installation began in October with the generator expected to return to commercial service by December.

Owned and operated by the Placer County Water Agency of Placerville, California, the Middle Fork Powerhouse provides 136 megawatts of electricity for the PG&E grid.

GE Hydro, a unit of GE Power Systems, is a world leader in the supply of hydro turbines, generators and related electro-technical equipment for the hydropower production industry. Capabilities include complete water-to-wire solutions for new hydroelectric plants and refurbishment and service for existing plants.
