GE Energy to Design And Rebuild Substation for Major Power Provider in U.K. ATLANTA, GA (August 19, 2004) GE Energy has been awarded a contract for approximately US$16M by SP PowerSystems, part of the ScottishPower group based in Glasgow, United Kingdom to rebuild its Capenhurst 132kV air insulated switchgear substation. Under the scope of the project, GE Energy will design and rebuild the Capenhurst substation, provide equipment protection, primary equipment, civil works and cabling. The project will begin this year and continue for four years with 16 bays being replaced in phases of four bays per year. "This project builds upon our many years of experience working with SP PowerSystems," said Ricardo Artigas, president of energy services for GE Energy. "Our turnkey design will help SP PowerSystems rebuild its substation with proven technology and support." The Capenhurst substation is a critical grid supply point in the ScottishPower region, providing power to Chester and a major industrial area in Northwest England. GE Energy's substation projects team in the United Kingdom will execute this project. "We have previous experience delivering challenging projects with GE Energy," said Chris Pace, project manager, SP PowerSystems. "GE's competitive solutions and technically approved air insulated switchgear offer made them the preferred choice for this project." SP PowerSystems manages £2.5 billion worth of equipment, including 80,000 substations. It manages and maintains over 115,000 kilometers of electricity network and delivers up to 7400 megawatts of electricity every day. The network includes strategic links, or interconnectors, with the grid systems of England and Wales and Northern Ireland, allowing electricity to be traded across the United Kingdom.
