GE Energy Installs Extended Life Hot Section for Hawaiian Power Plant GE's First Application in a Naphtha Operation HOUSTON, TEXAS (August 20, 2004) GE Energy's aeroderivative business recently installed an LM2500 extended life hot section and combustor for Hamakua Energy Partners in Honoka'a, Hawaii. This was the first time GE has provided an extended life hot section in a naphtha operation for a base LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbine. GE's extended life hot section is expected to operate for approximately 32,000 hours on the LM2500 base engine, which is twice as long as normal, allowing Hamakua to double its hot section maintenance interval. Other benefits include improved cooling airflow, higher temperature resistance and reduced oxidation of hardware. "Our customers requested hot section hardware with a longer life," said Dan Werrell, general manager, GE Energy's aeroderivative services operations. "GE's extended life hot section doubles the expectations of our customers, allowing them to reduce outages and costs associated with replacing the hardware." Hamakua Energy Partners is a 60-megawatt, combined-cycle plant, consisting of two GE LM2500s and a steam turbine. Its primary fuel is naphtha, a petroleum distillate. LSFO is used as a startup and shutdown fuel. GE's extended life hot section is offered as a rotable module, a section of the engine that will be removed as a unit and replaced. This shortens the installation time, whether in the field or the service center. GE Energy's aeroderivative business is a leading supplier of aeroderivative gas turbines for industrial and marine applications and is also the world's largest and most experienced aeroderivative gas turbine service provider. It provides power-generating equipment to utilities, industries and marine fleets throughout the world. In addition, the company provides comprehensive maintenance coverage and is dedicated to helping its customers improve their operations through reduced plant downtime, improved efficiency, and enhanced power or production output.
