GE Supplies Turnkey Hydropower Plant For SunWater of Australia

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA. (September 29, 2004) — One of Australia's newest hydro plants, the 1.6-megawatt Tinaroo Hydropower Station in Atherton, Queensland, was supplied by GE Energy. This small hydro plant joins 12 other small hydro plants in Australia that have been completed as turnkey projects by GE over the past 10 years.

Owner of the Tinaroo station is SunWater, a Brisbane-based water industry company providing water infrastructure and supply services throughout Queensland, Australia and the region.

The Tinaroo station is the first electric power generation facility to be owned and operated by SunWater. “The Tinaroo Falls project represents a positive step forward for SunWater by highlighting our expansion into business sectors other than bulk water supply," said SunWater CEO Peter Noonan. The turnkey water-to-wire project contract for the new power station was valued at approximately A$3.3 million.

The Tinaroo station is located at the Tinaroo Falls Dam and generates power for the electrical grid operated by Ergon Energy, one of Australia's largest electricity companies.

The new plant began operation in May of 2004, two months ahead of schedule, and recently completed its first 90 days of power generation operation without incident. SunWater Mareeba Business Manager Brett Stevenson credited "a focused team effort between SunWater and the main contractor General Electric" for the success of the project.

The turnkey contract executed by GE Energy's hydro business included the supply of a 1.6-megawatt Francis hydro turbine manufactured in Norway, as well as the civil works, a generator, mechanical works and the electrical plant. The turbine inlet valve, penstock, transformer and control room were manufactured in Australia.

"Tinaroo is a perfect example of our ability to provide standard plant design solutions that result in cost-effective, timely projects for our customers," said Anton Kubler, GE Energy’s regional director for hydro operations in Australia.
