German Wind Farm to Receive Five-Megawatt Upgrade from GE Energy SALZBERGEN, GERMANY (November 4, 2004) — GE Energy has received a contract to repower the Windpark Hartmannshain in Germany, which will triple the capacity of the site from 2.5 to 7.5 megawatts. This is the first repowering project in the state of Hessen. To facilitate the repowering, GE Energy will replace seven smaller wind turbines of various sizes that were built in 1992 with four of its most recent 1.5-megawatt models. An older 1.5-megawatt wind turbine, also part of the project site, did not require an upgrade and will continue to operate at the wind farm. The Windpark Hartmannshain is located in Grebenshain, Hessen, Germany, 40 kilometers from Fulda and 70 kilometers from Giessen, in the center of Germany. The repowered site's 7.5 megawatts of capacity is expected to annually produce approximately 14,000 megawatt-hours of wind-generated electricity for the local area. "We are pleased to repower Germany's Windpark Hartmannshain," said Herbert Peels, General Manager - Europe for GE Energy's wind operations. "The repowering potential for wind farms in Germany is enormous, with estimates ranging from 1,000 megawatts by 2010 to 4,000 megawatts of new capacity during the next decade. We are looking forward to supporting our customers' upcoming repowering needs by providing the highest value technology and fast, responsive service." Hessen Energie GmbH, a subsidiary of OVAG, is the developer of the facility. OVAG, the local electricity supply company, will continue to purchase the project's power. The repowering project began in late October and is expected to be completed in November 2004. In addition to supplying the wind turbines, GE Energy also will install the turbines and provide operation and maintenance services. When originally built in the early 1990s, the Windpark Hartmannshain was the first wind farm in the state of Hessen. Through the years the wind farm served as a test facility and model for companies interested in wind energy. GE's 1.5-megawatt wind turbines are among the world's most widely sold wind turbines in the multi-megawatt class, with more than 2,500 installations globally. About GE Energy GE Energy (www.gepower.com) is one of the world's leading suppliers of power generation and energy delivery technology, with 2003 revenues of nearly $18.5 billion. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, GE Energy provides equipment, service and management solutions across the power generation, oil and gas, transmission and distribution, distributed power and energy rental industries. With wind turbine design, manufacturing and/or assembly facilities in Germany, Spain, India and the United States, GE Energy's current wind energy portfolio includes wind turbines with rated outputs ranging from 1,500 to 3,600 kilowatts, and support services ranging from project development assistance to operation and maintenance. The company has developed and/or installed more than 6,700 wind turbines with a total capacity exceeding 5,000 megawatts.
