| ATLANTA, GA.—October 15, 2009—GE Energy announced today that its aeroderivative gas turbine business has entered into the low British thermal unit (BTU) gases segment in China with an order from Henan Liyuan Coking Co. Ltd. The gas turbines will burn 100% coke oven gas (COG), which will help the Liyuan Coking Plant reduce emissions and convert low BTU gas to power efficiently. Heating coal to extreme temperatures creates coke, a vital ingredient in the manufacturing of steel alloys. During the coking process, COG is typically vented to the atmosphere as waste. However, with the right technology, these gases can be utilized in a gas turbine for power generation. The Liyuan Coking Plant, located in Anyang, Henan, China, is purchasing two GE LM2500+ aeroderivative gas turbines with a standard annular combustor and water injection for NOx control that will utilize COG, a zero cost byproduct from its coking process, to produce electricity in a cogeneration facility. This project, which is GE Energy’s first COG order, will not only fulfill Liyuan’s selfpower demand, but also will feed the power to the public grids. “This project will use a low cost fuel to provide power for the Chinese public power grid and improve the conditions at the coking plant, by reducing emissions and increasing efficiency,” said Darryl Wilson, president and CEO of GE Energy’s aeroderivative business. “As our first order to burn coke oven gas for power generation, Liyuan chose us based on our proven technology and high quality control processes.” Annual power generation in the Henan province of China is about 480 GWh. Using GE’s LM2500+ gas turbines to utilize COG will improve environmental conditions of the Liyuan plant substantially; over 432,000 tons of CO2 emissions will be eliminated while NOx emissions will be reduced to less than 39 ppm. The first unit will be delivered by July 31, 2010, with the second to follow a month later, by August 31, 2010. Commercial operation for the first unit is planned for the fourth quarter of 2010. Henan Liyuan Coking Co., Ltd is a modern coking enterprise integrating coal washing, coking, production of chemical products and generating electricity. It is located in the north area of the Tongzhi Township, a famous historical and cultural town in Henan.
