The design of reliable, efficient gas and steam turbines requires the application of many diverse areas of technology. Many competing design and material requirements must be thoroughly evaluated so that optimum trade-offs can be achieved. As new design requirements are imposed, and if in-service problems occur, the turbine manufacturer must be able to contact resources with the technical competence to reconcile them quickly and effectively. The overriding objective in all turbine design activities is to produce turbine designs that minimize the life-cycle cost of ownership.
